357 magnum ballistics 20 inch barrel

Ballitsics by the inch shows the 357 is optimized with the 16 inch barrel and actually might lose fps with a longer barrel. Alot of research on the various forums tends to have less info on the ballistics and concentrate on ease of handling etc. Some discuss hand loading where one can reach better potential from a 20 inch electrical engineering lectureshuisarts banga sneek

Answer (1 of 5): By maximum effective range I gather you mean at what range will it effectively bring down small to medium game? The main problem with carbines chambered for pistol/revolver cartridges is the lack of velocity and poor ballistic coefficients. A .357 Mag carbine can fire a 140-gra...
Aug 27, 2021 · OregonSig. I've decided to sell my Ruger GP100 chambered in 38 special 357 magnum. It is a somewhat hard to find model because it has a 5 inch barrel which is the perfect compromise between the popular 4.2" and 6" revolvers. It ends up being a very balanced pistol and is a real joy to shoot. Extremely accurate in single action, and double action.
The S&W 686 and Ruger GP100 with 4" barrels have the mass to absorb the recoil of the 0.357 magnum blast. Unlike a snub-nose, the 4"barrel is long enough to burn most of the powder in the barrel. That helps with muzzle flash, round velocity, and precision. Feb 23, 2018. #9.

The FBI reported that during the first year of production of the "Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum," 63 agents purchased these guns, favoring the 3 1/2″ and 4″ barrel lengths. 10mm vs. 357 Mag Muzzle Energy. The .357 Magnum is a powerful cartridge, but in this case it takes a narrow 2nd place to the 10mm Auto. 10mm generally packs higher muzzle energies thanks in large part to the larger bullets. Even with similar bullets, however, it appears the 10mm does slightly better.
The .357 Magnum was a different story altogether: 14 of the 20 loads met FBI standards with 5 out of 5 expansion, and 9 of those loads gave the recommended 150% expanded diameter. This means that the .357 Magnum snubnose gives its owner 4-4.5 times the choice of suitable defensive ammunition that the .38 only revolver gives!

I can tell you there is little to no difference in max magnum( slow powder) loads between my 20" and 24" Rossi .357 rifles. I also had a Winchester20" .357 and it's ballistics were the same also. I think the 16" barrel is long enough to get the full potential of the .357 cartridge.
Answer (1 of 35): There's some context here that needs to be considered. There's been a few different 45 rounds through the years so here's my opinions; these are mine alone and there's a lot of leeway here. Wesson of firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson, and Winchester. It is based upon Smith & Wesson's earlier .38 Special cartridge. The .357 Magnum cartridge was introduced in 1934, and its use has since become widespread. This cartridge started the "Magnum ...
With .38 Special, and especially with .357 magnum, conventional wisdom says that barrel length has a huge bearing on the effectiveness of the bullet. The longer the barrel, the greater the velocity, and for self-defense rounds, higher velocities often translate to better penetration and expansion. The same could be said for the semi-auto ...
